Tours to Alcobaça and Nazaré.

Nazaré is a small fishing village, 100 kilometers (about 60 miles) north-east of Lisbon. When in Nazaré, go up the cliff, to the lighthouse and your breath will be taken away by the magnificent view of the incredibly beautiful sand beach and almost transparent turquoise water of the ocean. And for surfers from all over the world Nazaré is a legendary spot – here winter swells bring huge waves that are more than 30 meters (98 foot) high! In 2011 Garrett McNamara made Nazaré famous – it is the spot where he broke the world surfing record with the wave of 24 meters (78 foot) high. In 2013 the wave was registered to reach incredible 30 meters (98 foot)!

Alcobaça.The town main sight is the largest church in Portugal – Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Alcobaça (Alcobaça Monastery). The Monastery was founded in the 12th century when the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, was getting ready to battle the Moors and he vowed to build a magnificent temple to commemorate his victory. He kept his promise and, having defeated the Moors, started the construction of the church that was finished in the 14th century. The church complex is one of the most splendid examples of Gothic monuments; it consists of five monasteries, seven dormitories, a library, a refectory and an enormous kitchen. The temple inner yard is strikingly beautiful and you can enjoy the view from the balconies. Everything in the monastery – from dormitories to the kitchen – is breathing with the spirit of medieval life.

Right in front of the temple there is a broad square which accentuates the beauty and grandeur of the church façade. All around the square there are cosy coffee shops and small stores where you can buy famous Alcobaça chinaware and ceramics.

Alcobaça and Nazaré tour is 50 € per person.

Tours to Óbidos.

Just 10 kilometers (6 miles) away from Peniche there is an amazing, romantic town of Óbidos. It consists of only two streets, with the population of about 3 thousand people; however, the town is proud of being a national and world heritage monument.
The town history is truly romantic – in 1282 it became a wedding gift from King Denis of Portugal to his wife-to-be Queen Isabel (Elizabeth of Aragon).
The town has preserved its genuine medieval character – its picturesque cobblestone streets, white churches, houses covered in flowers and the 12th century castle walls turn the town into a stunning open-air museum.
Another important sight is the Castle of Óbidos surrounded by massive fortified walls that are more than 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) long. The town municipality museum exhibits the collections of paintings, sculptures and church art as well as English and French weapons left here from the times of Napoleon’s invasion. Include into your must-see list the 12th century St. Jacob cathedral and the 14th century St. John the Baptist church that now also accommodates the Óbidos parish museum.

The authorities are putting their every effort into preserving the town unique medieval character – the fortress hosts medieval fairs, festivals of ancient music; November is the month of the annual chocolate festival as Óbidos is the Portuguese chocolate capital! Besides, Óbidos is rightly famous for its wines and of course Ginjinha cherry liqueur. You can taste Ginjinha that is served in small chocolate glasses practically everywhere!
Óbidos tour is 30 € per person.
